Step-by-Step Guide to Building Your Pallet Chair
Step 1: Prepare Your Pallet
Start with a single EUR/EPAL pallet. This standard-sized pallet is ideal for sturdy, durable furniture. You can find these pallets at local home depots or recycling centers.
(of course a shoutout for my little princess, who help me to present this project😉)
Step 2: Dismantle the Pallet
Use a hammer and woodcutter to carefully disassemble the pallet. Separate the wooden slats while removing any nails. If you’d like a visual guide on how to dismantle pallets, check out my tutorial video on MyATCtv DIY.
Step 3: Sand the Wood
After dismantling, sand each piece using a power sander. This smooths out rough edges and prepares the wood for assembly, giving it a clean, new look.
Step 4: Build the Backrest
Using the longest wooden slats, assemble the backrest. Support it with smaller pieces, fixing them securely with screws. Check out my video for a better look at this process!
Step 5: Create the Seat
To build the seat, use medium-length wooden pieces, supporting them with smaller slats. Leave small gaps between the slats for a rustic look.
Step 6: Attach the Seat and Legs to the Backrest
Now, attach the seat to the backrest using screws. Add four wooden pieces as legs, positioning them in a criss-cross style on each side for a modern aesthetic.
Step 7: Final Touches
After assembly, sand the entire chair for a smooth finish and apply a protective coat of paint or wood sealant. This will add durability and a polished look to your DIY chair.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. Can I really make a chair from just one EUR pallet?
Yes! This project is designed to use a single EUR/EPAL pallet, making it a budget-friendly and eco-friendly way to create a sturdy chair. With careful disassembly and creative use of each piece, you’ll have enough wood for both the seat and backrest.
2. How do I know if my pallet is safe to use for furniture?
Look for pallets that are stamped with "HT" (heat-treated) instead of "MB" (methyl bromide), as MB-treated pallets may contain harmful chemicals. EUR/EPAL pallets are generally safe and treated to meet high standards, making them ideal for indoor and outdoor furniture.
3. What kind of paint should I use for outdoor pallet furniture?
For outdoor furniture, it’s best to use weather-resistant paint or a sealant specifically designed for outdoor wood. This will protect the chair from moisture, sun damage, and general wear over time.
4. How much weight can a pallet chair support?
When built correctly, a pallet chair can support a substantial amount of weight—typically up to 150-200 kg (330-440 lbs), depending on the quality and thickness of the pallet wood used.
5. Do I need special tools to build a pallet chair? Not necessarily! Basic tools like a hammer, drill, screwdriver, and sander are enough for this project. If you have access to a miter saw or table saw, it can make cutting more precise, but it’s not essential.
6. How long does it take to make a pallet chair?
For beginners, this project may take about 2-4 hours from start to finish, depending on the level of detail and finish you want. Experienced DIYers may complete it even faster.
7. Is a 3D plan available for this project?
Yes! A 3D plan is available to help guide you through each step. Sign up for our newsletter to access this exclusive 3D plan and ensure a smoother building process.
Pallets are made in most cases from hardwoods - in years past I made several things from pallets. The wood as shown, once trimmed and sanded can really be beautiful, especially when properly stained. Great reminder of my earlier wood working days. Usually can get pallets for free as well - can't beat that for hardwoods.
