In the mid 1600’s clockmakers developed clocks with longer pendulums to obtain better time-keeping accuracy. They were placed in wooden case to stand upright on the floor and that is how grandfather clocks were made. Since then they have become very popular items of household furniture.
Coffin Clocks, or also known as grandfather clocks come in a huge variety of sizes and designs, ranging from antiques built by famous clock makers several centuries ago, to those made today.
They have adopted the name ‘Grandfather Clock’ in the late 1800’s. The American songwriter Henry Work published a song called “My Grandfather’s Clock” when he returned to America from his trip in England around 1875. In the song he talked about the unique story he heard when he was in England about the clock that stopped working the moment its owner died. The song became very popular and sold over a million copies.
Grandfather clocks have appeared in a variety of cases and many styles. They used to be embellished with ornate carved mood and often came with chimes, tunes and moon-phase dials.
They used to be very fashionable in the past but then over the years as fashion changed, so did the interest for them.
Nowadays these clocks have caught the attention of collectionneurs all around the world. Some antique shops fetch tens of thousands of dollars for grandfather clocks that date from the 1600’s and 1700’s.
