When it comes to home decorating there is always the million dollar question of how to arrange everything, ranging from a coffee table, side chest, mirror or even a bookcase. Keep in mind there is no right or wrong way or a magical formula for doing it. However use these three easy tips to blend your space layer by layer from one place to another, creating harmony throughout your lovely home.
Consistency and Diversity
Always try to avoid monotony when you are decorating your space with accessories. It’s about how you display the items that is more obvious than the items themselves. Try and put a balance between the things that feel like they match and the things that spice up the room by being different. You do however need a bit of both in your arrangement. Perhaps you could use alternate neutral and accent colors, which will give walls different depths and visual breaks from room to room.
Proportion and Pattern
Always pay attention to the proportion. You want to steer away from a tiny vase on a large table or an enormously high arrangement of flowers on a tiny side table. Don’t be one of those people that tend to use accessories which are too small for the surrounding, but if you have small accessories we advise you to display them but try to give them more liveliness in the arrangement. Maybe group them on a plate of a fabric covered box or give them look bigger by placing them on top of stacked books.
Decorate in Layers
If you have successfully chosen the desired objects and followed the first two easy tips, now it is time to have fun and layer and mellow. The key is balance. Too much layering can make the space look sloppy and cluttered and work against your desired effect. Start off with a taller piece slightly off center. This piece will define your arrangement. Now add layers. A taller layer in the background, a medium sized in the middle and your tiniest objects in the front. Finally add some fabric or ribbon to mellow the edges of the the table for example, to bring color and certain highlights.
Play with different combinations until you find the arrangement that is most appealing to you. Think outside the box, do unusual moves. For example tuck flowers in a space that seems too static. Remember, if your arrangement still looks cluttered, maybe you are trying to display too much. Tuck some of your treasures in a box somewhere and switch them out a few times a year to add fresh new look to your home.
