When choosing the art for the home or office there are some factors to consider and for the sake of simplicity I will break them up into four categories.
Composition - When you think of a kitchen, you think of fruits and veggies and chefs and wine bottles. When you think of the bedroom you think of softness or passio. When you think of the bathroom you think of clean and fresh. There are certain compositions that are best fitted to certain rooms. It is ideal when the images you choose help the mood of the room. Another consideration is the application of more than one image in a room.
Color - The colors in one room should complement each other. The color of the walls, furniture, the trim molding, window treatments and the other room enhancements. Usually when people decorate a room, they choose the furniture first and art second. However choosing art first actually makes more sense. How often you enter a room and compliment the ottoman first. But it almost always happen with a nice piece of art. Art is often the show piece of the room. Therefore allow the art to dictate what kind of furniture you will choose.
Space - This can be little tricky. If you have a large sized wall or room with a vaulted ceiling. A group of images often does the trick for this space. Same thing goes for the space above the stove that is four feet wide and two feet tall. Nowadays you also have the luxury to use a single image broken up into several gallery wrapped canvas pictures spaced apart to cover a large area.
Personal Preference - Many people change wall colors and the accents of room just to accomodate art. But what if there is a piece of art you are particularly fond of but it clashes with the style and architecture of the room or doesn’t match the color scheme? Do you get rid of it? Always remember that when it comes to art, choose art pieces that put a smile on your face and the faces of those who live with you. If you are happy with the chosen art, the rest is just a rough framework.
