Skylight windows are usually situated in small rooms that lack light because of need for privacy, or in rooms that have a sense of majesty from having sunlight pour in through a gap in the roof.
It’s useful to have the skylight seamed with vinyl to help keep cold air out and warm air in. The vinyl stripping around the frame of the window prevents them from leaking rain.
The usual size is between 30 cm and 120 cm. When you have a room for a small vinyl sealed skylight window it is recommended that you get a funnel shaped one which is wider at the bottom. This way more light can be filtered into the room and spread over a large area. But light adds heat so if you live in a hot climate, also make sure you vent this type of skylight window to allow heat to escape it.
In the past skylights were framed with wood to prevent water from leaking in. Nowadays there is no need for that because they are made secure and waterproof and the vinyl prevents them from sweating. However if you want to create a more elegant look, wood wrapped panels can be easily fitted around the vinyl windows to achieve the old traditional appearance.
There are three different kinds of skylight vinyl windows. Vented, Sun Tunnels and Window Shade.
The Vented ones are more of a modern entity because in the past most skylights did not have the option to open or close. Nowadays there is an electronic or manual mechanism for opening or closing.
Sun tunnels are the second type of sunlight windows. They are holes about 30 cm wide that allow sunlight to dim areas. Usually are places in bathrooms, basements or attics.
The third type are window shades. There come with a lid, because sometimes you don’t want to have sunlight in your room especially if you are about to have a nap or watch a movie in a dimmed atmosphere. They also come with a remote and you can adjust the amount of light you want to enter the room.
